Humans as Vending Machines

Clearly, we have a long way to go in treating people as individual human beings!

Here’s an account of the steward of a cruise ship on how their managers treat them:

“When our managers go by, we press ourselves into the wall so they don’t think we’re doing something wrong.
They treat us like vending machines.
They flip their instructions at us like a coin and then wait, tapping their foot, until we give them exactly that they want.
The most human interaction we have on this boat is when someone flips their instruction at us and we can’t give them what they want.
And then it’s like they want to shake us, like whatever they want is stuck inside us.”
